James Hayes (1907-1993) was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1907 and trained in the 1920's at the Chicago Art Institute under Ernst Detterer. He developed an interest in historical scripts and their modern application and studied not only Western scripts, but also Egyptian hieroglyphics and Asian calligraphy, design, and illustration.
